EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
