The global fast-food chain has taken down a holiday advertisement produced with generative AI after encountering widespread public disapproval.

The 45-second film was developed with the help of AI video tools and was initially released online for the Dutch branch of McDonald's back on 6 December.

Viewer Response and Decision to Pull

Following its publication, audiences online criticized the employment of AI in the advert. Many described it as "uncanny" and "jarringly assembled".

"This moment serves as an valuable lesson as we explore the effective application of AI," stated a statement from the company.

The commercial was produced for the brand by Netherlands-based agency TBWA\Neboko and American firm The Sweetshop. It portrayed various scenarios that might go awry over the Christmas break, using the theme "the most terrible time of the year".

The Trend of AI Commercials

Campaigns that include AI-created content have emerged as a rising phenomenon among major companies, notably for the holiday campaign season.

  • Coca-Cola has similarly released back-to-back AI-created Christmas ads.
  • Technical Challenges: Because segments produced using generative AI are prone to become unstable the more extended they are, the majority of AI video outputs tend to be roughly short in length.
  • Broader Implications: The ad also sparked worries about automation in the production industry, with some commenters stating it could reduce work for actors.

Defense from the Production Company

Following the video's removal, a producer's CEO, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the advert.

She stated, the development took "seven weeks" and involved producing "countless iterations" which were then shaped in post-production "just as we would on any standard production".

"This wasn't just an experiment," she said. "It was a proper commercial."

Mixed Public Reception

While the McDonald's ad was predominantly panned, the reception for other AI-assisted campaigns has been varied.

For instance, a consecutive AI-generated Christmas ad from another major brand according to analysis achieved a significant "favorable response" from online commenters.

However, other businesses have likewise encountered backlash for employing the technique in their campaigns. Italian fashion house Valentino, for example, was criticized for ads that critics called "cheap" and "disturbing".

The incident underscores the evolving discussion within the advertising and creative sectors about the balance between new tools and audience reception.
