A person who spiked candy with sedative and provided them to minors at a summer program in the region has confessed to sexual crimes against two boys who were between nine and ten.

The defendant was arrested after eight minors and a grown-up experienced illness at the location in July.

The 76-year-old, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, pleaded guilty to a multiple criminal counts when he appeared at the judicial center on Friday.

However, he disputed one particular crime he was accused of, which was against a young boy.

The accused was remanded in custody prior to a additional proceeding on 28 November.

'Treat game'

Mary Prior KC, handling the case, outlined Ruben's offending to the court.

She stated his victims were under-privileged children who were attending a summer program which he managed.

The man conducted a "candy game" with the minors, the legal counsel explained, in which he would access the children's bedrooms when they were preparing to sleep and request they to consume candy "rapidly".

She told the court the man had conducted this practice with the boys "over an extended period", and children had previously fallen ill the subsequent day.

She explained Ruben had been able to explain this for many years as the minors being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepchild had concerns in summer 2025.

The prosecutor continued: "Recently" his family member had worries about the situation, with valid cause.

"They chose" to have a look in the man's possessions."

The prosecutor stated objects including lubricant, petroleum jelly and injection devices were discovered, and his family member alerted the police about his suspicions.

She stated the man continued to conduct the "sweet game" with six youngsters that time - that Saturday - and they were all sick the next day.

"The police had not gone out by that point," she continued.

The police watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, had stated that it was investigating the police response of the incident.

The prosecutor explained the minors were unable to walk properly due to their condition, so the family member called the police once more.

She said the defendant then engaged in the "sweet game" in a room of five youngsters.
