Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

Each time a significant honors show draws close, you'll find a demand to include additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories successfully include many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category that year
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge game development, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
