Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a test for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your partner and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but inside Together exists a deep examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and the two fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He dreads the concept of completely losing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters face the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the metaphor never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your partner and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu now.
